WHAT DOES 'TAKE SPACE/ MAKE SPACE'

MEAN TO YOU?

OUR 2023 CAMPAIGN THEME IS TAKE SPACE/ MAKE SPACE. THINK ABOUT AND SHARE WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN INTENTIONALLY CREATE SPACE FOR SURVIVORS IN OUR WORK OR SOCIAL SETTINGS. WHAT DOES TAKE SPACE/MAKE SPACE MEAN TO YOU?

Special thanks to STEPS to End Family Violence and Celestino Couture.

STEPS to End Family Violence – a program of Rising Ground - has worked to prevent intimate partner and gender-based violence since 1986 with a focus on prevention, intervention, and policy advocacy. STEPS has been an active member of Denim Day NYC for 10 years and has partnered with the fashion forward Celestino Couture to create a denim Fashion Impact Cape! The eco-conscious design house creates garments with a social justice purpose and incorporated images of Consent created by teens in STEPS’ Grow.Rise.Lead (GRL) group. The unique cape was created into an Instragram filter to be worn by everyone on Denim Day. It has now become a “travelling” garment to be worn throughout the year by advocates, influencers, students, survivors, elected officials, and celebrities.

TAKE A STAND AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT & VIOLENCE

Denim Day NYC is a coalition of community organizations, elected officials, students, and volunteers united to promote awareness around the issue of sexual assault. Denim Day grew out of a case in which a rape conviction was overturned because the judge reasoned the victim’s tight jeans meant that she had to have helped her assailant remove them, implying consent. People were outraged all over the world and wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes and myths surrounding sexual assault. Denim Day NYC started in 2010 with a collaborative of three agencies and has grown to more than 40 organizations uniting to promote awareness around the issue of sexual assault.
